EEG-Guided MeRT for Autism · Michigan

Your child's brain is unique.
Their treatment should be too.

MeRT® starts with a detailed map of your child's actual brainwave patterns — then builds a treatment protocol around those findings. Not a standard approach. Theirs.

If you've tried everything and still feel like you haven't found the answer — you're not alone.

Most families who come to Brain Treatment Center Michigan have already done the work. ABA therapy. Speech therapy. Occupational therapy. Medications. Supplements. They haven't given up — they've just realized that none of those approaches start with a map of how their child's brain is actually functioning.

MeRT does. Before any treatment begins, we record a detailed quantitative EEG — a picture of your child's brainwave activity. That data tells us exactly where communication is breaking down and what frequency we should use to encourage healthier patterns. Everything that follows is built around those findings.

Four steps. Six weeks. Built around your child's brain.

Every MeRT treatment course follows the same structure — but no two protocols are alike, because every brain is different.

1

Initial consultation

Meet with our care team. We review your child's history, answer your questions, and confirm MeRT is an appropriate fit before anything else happens.

2

qEEG brain mapping

A comfortable cap records your child's brainwave activity — no needles, no discomfort. This gives Dr. Wallace the data to design a personalized protocol.

3

Daily treatment sessions

Monday through Friday, five days a week, for approximately six weeks. Each session is 30–45 minutes. The EEG repeats at weeks two, four, and six so the protocol adjusts as your child responds.

4

Results review

At the end of treatment, you sit down with Dr. Wallace to review the before-and-after EEG data side by side and discuss what changed and what comes next.

Why personalization changes everything

Standard TMS has been used for years — and it can help. But it uses a fixed protocol that's the same for every patient. MeRT builds each protocol from scratch around your child's own brainwave data. That difference matters most for autism, where every brain is genuinely different.

Standard TMS
  • —Same protocol for every patient
  • —Fixed frequency, fixed location
  • —No EEG-based personalization
  • —Protocol does not adjust during treatment
MeRT at BTM
  • ✓Protocol built from your child's EEG data
  • ✓Frequency tuned to their dominant brainwave
  • ✓qEEG repeated at weeks 2, 4, and 6
  • ✓Protocol adjusts as the brain responds

What families ask before they start

Read our full research summary on rTMS for autism →

What age does MeRT treat for autism?

We treat children ages 3 and older for autism and developmental disorders at both our Metro Detroit and Grand Rapids locations.

Can MeRT be combined with ABA or other therapies?

Yes — MeRT can be safely combined with ABA, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other approaches. Many families find that other therapies become more effective after MeRT treatment by addressing the underlying neurological patterns first.

Is MeRT covered by insurance for autism?

MeRT for autism is an off-label use of rTMS technology, so the treatment itself is cash-pay — insurance does not cover the rTMS sessions. However, if you have an accepted insurance plan, we can often bill your physician visits and EEGs separately, which typically reduces your total cash-pay cost by approximately 33%. Our team will walk you through exact costs before you commit to anything.

How long does treatment take?

A standard MeRT course runs approximately six weeks — five days a week, Monday through Friday. Each session is 30–45 minutes. The EEG is repeated at weeks two, four, and six so the protocol adjusts throughout.

Is MeRT safe for children?

MeRT uses FDA-cleared TMS equipment and is non-invasive and drug-free. No electricity enters the body — only gentle magnetic pulses. It is well-tolerated in pediatric patients and performed under physician oversight throughout.
