Answers from Brain Treatment Center Michigan
At Brain Treatment Center Michigan, we understand that an autism diagnosis can bring many questions, especially when exploring new treatment options. We provide MeRT® (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy), a noninvasive, customized approach designed to support better brain communication. Here, we’ve compiled answers to the most common questions families ask us about MeRT for autism.
MeRT is a highly individualized form of brain stimulation that uses precise mapping to guide gentle magnetic pulses. The process starts with a detailed recording of brainwave activity using EEG and EKG technology. This data helps us pinpoint areas of the brain that are not communicating as efficiently as they could be. From there, we design a stimulation plan that’s unique to the individual.
Standard TMS typically uses a uniform treatment setting for all patients, whereas MeRT is adapted for each person based on their own brain activity. Neurofeedback also works to encourage healthier brainwave patterns, but does so by using visual or sound cues to train the brain. MeRT takes a more direct route, applying targeted magnetic pulses that are adjusted according to ongoing brainwave analysis.
Yes. MeRT is completely noninvasive, requires no medication, and is generally well-tolerated. Sessions are quick, comfortable, and carried out under the close supervision of our clinical team, who make adjustments as needed to maintain both safety and effectiveness.
MeRT can be tailored for many people on the autism spectrum, from early childhood through adulthood. The most important factor is whether the person can remain seated comfortably for the short duration of each session. Before beginning, our clinical team conducts a thorough review to confirm that MeRT is an appropriate option.
The process starts with a consultation, where we review medical and developmental history, answer your questions, and determine if MeRT may be right for your child. If so, we’ll schedule an EEG and EKG to collect baseline brain data that will guide the treatment plan.
Most MeRT programs last 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions five days per week. Each appointment takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Midway through treatment, we perform another EEG to measure progress and make any necessary adjustments.
Patients usually describe it as a light tapping sensation on the scalp. The treatment is painless, requires no recovery time, and most patients adjust to the routine quickly.
Yes. We welcome parents and caregivers to remain in the room to provide comfort and reassurance.
Not at all. Many families continue with speech therapy, occupational therapy, ABA, or other interventions during MeRT. Some notice that these therapies become more effective as brain function improves.
Every person responds differently. Some see improvements within weeks, while others notice more gradual changes. We track progress closely and share updates throughout treatment.
Parents often report:
Increased engagement and social interaction
More frequent or clearer speech
Better emotional regulation and calmer behavior
Improved sleep and daily routines
Many families find improvements last well beyond the end of treatment. Some individuals may benefit from periodic follow-up sessions, which we’ll discuss on a case-by-case basis.
If treatment ends sooner than planned, we’ll guide you on ways to maintain any progress achieved. Even partial treatment can sometimes yield positive results.
Currently, MeRT is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD. For all other conditions, MeRT is used off-label and is unlikely to be covered by insurance. However, we can provide the documentation needed if you choose to submit a claim for potential reimbursement. Please note that neither Medicare nor Medicaid provides any coverage for MeRT or TMS treatment.
We will review all costs during your consultation so you can make an informed decision before starting. Pricing includes the initial assessment, treatment sessions, and ongoing clinical oversight.
While we do not have in-house financing, many families use HSA/FSA funds or third-party options such as CareCredit. Our team can help you explore available resources.
As part of the Brain Treatment Center network, we combine advanced technology with a compassionate, patient-centered approach. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual’s unique brain activity, and our team is dedicated to supporting meaningful progress in a safe, welcoming environment.
Our staff includes highly trained professionals with specialized expertise in using MeRT with those on the autism spectrum. We are committed to combining clinical knowledge with personal attention for every patient and family. Learn more about us here.
The first step is to schedule a consultation. We’ll walk you through the process, answer your questions, and, if MeRT is a good fit, arrange a brain scan to begin creating a customized plan.
We know how many questions can come up when you’re exploring options for your child, and it’s completely okay to take your time.
You don’t have to make any decisions today. Before we move forward, we’ll walk you through a simple, step-by-step process to see if MeRT might be a good fit for your child.
Our caring New Patient Coordinator will be with you every step of the way. She’ll listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and explain exactly what will happen. If you decide to move ahead, she’ll also help schedule your child’s EEG and set up your consultation with our doctor, so everything feels clear and easy.
