AUTISM TREATMENT FAQS

MeRT for Autism: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers from Brain Treatment Center Michigan

At Brain Treatment Center Michigan, we know that an autism diagnosis often comes with many questions, especially when families are considering brain-based treatment options.

This page provides straightforward answers to common questions about MeRT® (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy), a personalized form of EEG-guided rTMS used in autism care.

Our goal is to help you better understand this approach and decide what questions to ask as you explore the next steps for your child.

Understanding MeRT for Autism

What is MeRT treatment for autism?

MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is a personalized form of EEG-guided rTMS that uses non-invasive brain mapping to guide gentle magnetic stimulation. It is designed to support how the brain communicates and regulates itself in children with autism.

MeRT uses rTMS technology, but differs from standard rTMS in that it is guided by EEG data and customized for each individual rather than using a fixed protocol.

MeRT is non-invasive and medication-free. The technology used is based on rTMS equipment that is FDA-cleared for certain conditions and used off-label in clinical practice for others, including autism. A comprehensive evaluation is required to determine whether MeRT may be appropriate for a child.

MeRT can be tailored for many people on the autism spectrum, from early childhood through adulthood. The most important factor is whether the person can remain seated comfortably for the short duration of each session. Before beginning, our clinical team conducts a thorough review to confirm that MeRT is an appropriate option.

Every child is different. The evaluation process helps determine whether a brain-based approach like EEG-guided rTMS may be a good fit based on your child’s individual brain activity and history.

Autism Treatment Process at Brain Treatment Center Michigan

What happens during the initial evaluation?

The process starts with a consultation, where we review medical and developmental history, answer your questions, and determine if MeRT may be right for your child. If so, we’ll schedule an EEG and EKG to collect baseline brain data that will guide the treatment plan.

Most MeRT programs last 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions five days per week. Each appointment takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Midway through treatment, we perform another EEG to measure progress and make any necessary adjustments.

Patients usually describe it as a light tapping sensation on the scalp. The treatment is painless, requires no recovery time, and most patients adjust to the routine quickly.

Yes. We welcome parents and caregivers to remain in the room to provide comfort and reassurance.

Not at all. Many families continue with speech therapy, occupational therapy, ABA, or other interventions during MeRT. Some notice that these therapies become more effective as brain function improves.

What to Expect from MeRT

When will we start seeing changes?

Every person responds differently. Some see improvements within weeks, while others notice more gradual changes. We track progress closely and share updates throughout treatment.

Parents often report:

  • Increased engagement and social interaction

  • More frequent or clearer speech

  • Better emotional regulation and calmer behavior

  • Improved sleep and daily routines

Many families find improvements last well beyond the end of treatment. Some individuals may benefit from periodic follow-up sessions, which we’ll discuss on a case-by-case basis.

If treatment ends sooner than planned, we’ll guide you on ways to maintain any progress achieved. Even partial treatment can sometimes yield positive results.

Cost & Insurance for MeRT Autism Treatment

Does insurance cover MeRT for autism?

Currently, MeRT is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD. For all other conditions, MeRT is used off-label and is unlikely to be covered by insurance. However, we can provide the documentation needed if you choose to submit a claim for potential reimbursement. Please note that neither Medicare nor Medicaid provides any coverage for MeRT or TMS treatment.

We will review all costs during your consultation so you can make an informed decision before starting. Pricing includes the initial assessment, treatment sessions, and ongoing clinical oversight.

While we do not have in-house financing, many families use HSA/FSA funds or third-party options such as CareCredit. Our team can help you explore available resources.
