Have You Experienced a Traumatic Brain Injury or Concussion?
This non-invasive, no-medication Treatment uses magnetic waves to gently stimulate affected areas of the brain to help restore function with some truly stunning results.
Injury to the brain, whether a Concussion or a Traumatic Brain Injury, can cause some serious symptoms which can disrupt one’s quality of life or even be partially or extremely debilitating. Some of these adverse effects can also be long lasting or considered permanent damage.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) defines a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as:
A blow to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue. An injury can also occur without a direct blow to the head, such as in an auto accident where the forces cause the head to move violently in one direction and then snap back in another direction. This causes the brain to be jostled around inside the skull and can also injure the brain. Suffering a closed head injury can produce symptoms that range from mild to severe, based on the degree of damage that was done to the brain. While it’s possible for a person to experience a TBI to not have a loss of consciousness, in moderate to severe cases, LOC does usually happen. More severe cases of traumatic brain injuries often can result in coma or even death.”
However, our Brain Treatment Center here in Oklahoma City, as well as other BTCs in other locations, have witnessed many startling results and incredible successes in addressing such brain injuries.
In the ensuing months after the concussion I just wasn’t myself… My academics began to suffer as well. I didn’t feel right. My EEG showed me that something had physically changed with how my brain functioned. After three days of treatment, I felt substantially better. After two weeks, I felt like I did before my injury. MeRT was life changing.” – 21 year old soccer player who suffered from TBI
A New Approach for Treatment of TBI and Concussion
MeRT (Magnetic E-Resonance Therapy) is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment used to help with recovery of Traumatic Brain Injuries and Post-concussive syndrome. This state-of-the-art technology uses a magnetic field to stimulate and balance brain function, which is guided by sophisticated diagnostics and imaging.
Spencer O. Miller, M.D. is our Board-certified Neurologist who uses this technology to help your brain recover from injury and relieve the symptoms associated with TBI and concussions. If your brain injury is not healing and you are suffering from side-effects, you may benefit from MeRT treatment.
A traumatic brain injury can result from different types of insult. It can happen from a direct blow to the head, but can also occur without a direct blow when forces cause your head to move violently in one direction and then snap back in another, such as in an auto accident. Any time the brain moves inside the skull, it can cause injury.
I’m back! My TBI turned me into someone I barely recognized. I was depressed, mean, and short-tempered. I pushed through life filled with frustration and a deep sense of sadness that this was it. I just had to keep pushing through life with an overwhelming tiredness. I’m so glad I was wrong. I think my family are even more thankful. This treatment changed everything, and I am forever thankful.” – 41-year old male with TBI, Executive, Nov 2017
If You Are Suffering From a TBI or Concussion, MeRT may be the Answer you are Looking for!
Dr. Miller and the staff at The Brain Treatment Center in Oklahoma City offer the MeRT treatment protocols to help patients who have suffered concussion or TBI.
MeRT is a treatment process that utilizes TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) but it is a much more individualized approach than TMS. TMS has been used for a long time to treat dysregulation within the brain, however in and of itself, it is more of a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment since it is only able to target a single location in the brain with a single frequency, regardless of condition.
MeRT is a unique and much improved process of utilizing TMS. By using a quantitative EEG/EKG to determine exactly what part of the brain is affected and to what degree, we are able to tailor treatment specifically to each individual’s needs.
Everything changed when I started treatment. Within two weeks I was sleeping better. I was off all 12 of my meds that I was on when I started treatment, and I was starting to enjoy life again. After the first month I was socializing with people again, I was able to work out for the first time in years, and I started to help my wife with the bills and our budget. A conservative estimate is that I have had a 60 – 70% reduction of the symptoms I listed above and have a whole new lease on life. I can focus. I feel good about myself. I feel confident. I laugh again. Most importantly, I can feel the love for and from my family again. I have never met a group of people who truly are solely focused on helping people feel human again. Spend a day here and you will see a miracle.” — MeRT Patient for TBI
If you think you might be interested in exploring MeRT, you don’t have to decide anything right away. There are many steps in determining if MeRT is the Right Treatment for You.
We understand that considering a treatment that you don’t know that much about can be daunting and you may feel quite uncertain about whether this is right for you. So the first easy step is to start with a simple phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. Here you can discuss your symptoms and history, ask all the questions you want and have her explain the protocols, fees and details of Treatment.
If after this you are interested taking the next step in seeing if MeRT treatment is right for you, we will initially schedule two appointments, both of which are about 45 minutes in length. At the first appointment, our neuro-technician will perform a EEG and an EKG. Both are simple, painless and non-invasive tests to see exactly what is happening in your brain. At the second appointment, a few days later when your test results are in and have been analyzed, you will have a one on one consultation with the doctor. Here you will discuss your test results, ask any additional questions that you may have, and together determine if you (or your child, if this is about your child) are a candidate for treatment.
If you are uncertain whether MeRT is the right treatment for you, the testing and consultation will allow both you and the doctor to decide if you may benefit from Magnetic Resonance Therapy.
If you and the doctor decide to move forward with MeRT, the next step is what we call the Assessment Period, where we will perform a initial period of treatment, followed by a new EEG to see if you are responding to the treatment.
During this assessment, we are looking for any clinical changes and confirm that you are having a positive response to the treatment. You (or your child) will likely notice improvements starting to take place. At the end of the assessment period, we will perform another qEEG/EKG to confirm that changes are also showing in the brain. This is assessed based on the new EEG results as compared to the initial one done before treatment started, as well as symptom improvements.
Take the 1st Step in Finding out if You might Benefit
Our New Patient Coordinator is here for you. She will take the time to listen to your concerns and carefully explain all of the details and information you need. She can answer any questions that you may have. If, after this, you would like to schedule a Consultation with the Doctor, she can get you scheduled.

I’m two or three months past my last treatment, and I can honestly say my brain is in a better place than it was before. The emotional highs and lows I was living with have stabilized. My cognition took off during that period, and it hasn’t slowed down since.”

Symptoms of TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and Concussion
Depending on the severity of the brain injury, symptoms can be mild or severe. If you’ve suffered a mild concussion, a full recovery can be made simply by allowing some time to pass. Generally, with a mild concussion, loss of consciousness does not occur, though you may still experience a jostled feeling or not remember the actual injury itself. In some cases, a person may suffer a concussion and not be aware of it at the time, but later develop symptoms.
However, in moderate to severe injuries, time may not alleviate the symptoms and further intervention is necessary. This is also true if a person suffers a second or multiple injuries to the brain. Severe injuries to the head often result in long periods of coma and require hospitalization, and some can cause death.
Patients who have severe traumatic brain injuries sometimes require long periods of hospitalization and may need rehabilitation for things such as speech or other senses affected, memory, coordination and motor skills, and even for emotions. People’s lives can be seriously disrupted because of a brain injury and may affect their relationships, the ability to cope with normal stressors, the ability to work again, or to even complete simple day to day activities.
Symptoms for Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion can include, but are not limited to:
- Confusion
- Headaches
- Loss of consciousness
- Fatigue
- Changes in vision
- Dilated pupils
- Loss of or lapses in memory
- Dizziness
- Cognitive difficulties
- Inappropriate emotional responses and thought processes
- Inability to think clearly or make decisions
- Facial weakness or weakness in other parts of the body
- Loss of bowel and/or bladder control
- Breathing problems
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Loss of hearing
- Depression/anxiety
There are instances where TBI can cause a hematoma, which is a blood clot that can form in the brain. Additionally, the brain may swell or bruise after injury. If you or someone you know has experienced injury to the brain, it is extremely important to get them to the ER as soon as possible for advanced imaging to rule these things out. Since brain damage can get worse after the injury occurs, early intervention is crucial.
Statistics for closed head injuries indicate that for patients who have a moderate injury, 60% will make a positive recovery, but approximately 25% will not and will continue to have impaired function. For those who suffer a severe brain injury, 33% will not survive, and others may be left in a vegetative state.
Athletes are much more prone to traumatic brain injuries including children and teenagers who participate in sports. Additionally, elderly people are more at risk since they can become more prone to falling.

Starting as a New Patient and What to Expect When Going Through Treatment
Initially, we will schedule two appointments for new patients. During the first appointment, our Neurotechnician, Angie, will perform a qEEG/EKG. This is a painless procedure and all that’s required from the patient is sitting in a chair with their eyes closed until the test is completed and enough data is gathered to compose an accurate reading. Your second appointment will serve as your clinical evaluation from Dr. Miller. He will have your test results and can go over treatment protocols along with answering any questions you may have.
Should you decide to proceed with treatment, Dr. Miller formulates a treatment plan and we will get you scheduled for your 2-week assessment of treatment. The assessment period includes treatment every day, Monday through Friday, for the first week, and treatment every day, Monday through Thursday for the second week.
The therapy is used to modulate electrical activity by using gentle magnetic fields which pass through the scalp from an electromagnetic coil. The test results are carefully analyzed as to the brain’s pattern of function and activity and it is through this analysis, along with the patient’s medical history, that we are able to determine the correct neural synchronization. The protocol that is designed individually for each patient is done so with the intent of encouraging improved brain communication.
The equipment used in the MeRT process has been FDA-cleared to treat Depression and OCD (Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder). It is also used “off label” for other practices of medicine to include TBI and other brain disorders.
The treatment duration for TBI usually lasts for 4 – 6 weeks. Treating appointments typically last from 30-45 minutes and occur once per day, Monday through Friday. Usually the patient will start to notice improvements within the first week or two. Once treatment has been completed, there is usually no need for follow-up treatment for TBI, however some patients do decide to return at a later date for a short-term “touch up.”
Daily treatment consists of the patient sitting in a chair while the Neurotechnician administers treatment from a hand-held magnet that is held on the scalp. This is a painless and non-invasive treatment. Magnetic impulses are administered every 6-8 seconds each minute for about 30-minutes. You may feel a slight sensation while the treatment is being administered, however it is not uncomfortable or painful. That is it for that day.
After going through the 2-week assessment period, another EEG is done to review and confirm improvements in brain activity and functionality. MeRT is usually then continued for an additional 2 – 4 weeks (for a total of 4 – 6 weeks total). There are cases where treatment duration may wish to be extended, or where patients may want to return at a later time for a follow-up treatment session of a week or so, but this isn’t needed for most. Each individual is different, and protocols may vary. During your total treatment duration, you will have interim EEGs every 2-weeks and at the end of your treatment to monitor your progress. Once treatment is over, you and Dr. Miller can make the determination if further duration of treatment or follow-up is needed based on your progress.
*The Results shown are based on active and strict observation of our regimens. Results may vary based on individual user and are not guaranteed.
Insurance Coverage
We are happy to provide you with the appropriate paperwork at the end of your treatment so that you can submit it to your insurance company to see if they can provide you with any reimbursement, but we are not able to accept it for treatment nor do we file it for you. In some cases it is possible to get reimbursement for certain conditions. Please note that neither Medicare or Medicaid provide any coverage for MeRT treatment.
Currently, rTMS (the treatment used in the MeRT process) is FDA-cleared for treatment for Depression and OCD (Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder). At this time, treatment for all other conditions is considered “off label.” We are hopeful that treatment for TBI/Concussion and PTSD will be cleared by the FDA in the next few years as the final studies for these conditions are underway through Texas A&M University.
