MERT TREATMENT

Conditions Treated Overview

Magnetic EEG-Guided Resonance Therapy has been used very successfully in the treatment of Neurological conditions. Here are some of the most commonly treated conditions

Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy

MeRT can be used to treat a wide range of Neurological Conditions

MeRT®, which stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a treatment process that is guided by very sophisticated qEEG imaging and uses a magnetic coil to modulate and balance dysregulation occuring in the brain.

A comprehensive list of conditions that we treat includes:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)/Drug-Resistant Depression
  • Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion Disorders
  • Autism *
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Learning Disorders
  • ADHD
  • After-Effects of Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Sleep Disorders

* Our clinic treats children 4 years and older for Autism and other developmental disorders.

The brain is a very unique organ, so therefore every patient responds a little differently. In the initial 2-week assessment period of treatment, we are able to determine how our patients will benefit from ongoing MeRT treatment, which is a highly personalized and targeted approach to non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical brain neuromodulation.

Conditions We Treat

There is a wide range of neurological conditions that have been successfully treated with MeRT. Here are some of the most common ones.

Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD

We have had very good success with symptom improvement treating both children and adults on the spectrum with MeRT.

Depression and MDD

Including Treatment Resistant Depression

rTMS as used with MeRT is FDA-cleared for the treatment of depression with the support of many published research studies that showed significant improvement.

Concussion

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Head injuries can cause long-term adverse effects to brain function and other symptoms. Studies show MeRT can be beneficial for recovery.

Anxiety

And Generalized Anxiety Disorder, GAD

May include panic attacks, agoraphobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) can also trigger anxiety or panic attacks.

PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Often a result of experiencing or witnessing terrifying events, violence, or going through extended periods of extreme stress. MeRT can help.

Brain Optimization

For Cognitive Impairment

Not as fast mentally as you were? Memory issues or lessening of your mental sharpness or speed can all be addressed and often improved with MeRT.

MeRT for Autism

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will each have their own individual degree of severity levels and behavior patterns depending on where they fall on the Spectrum. Some are low-functioning, non-verbal, and need assistance with many functions of daily living. Others are higher functioning, but may lack certain skills. Regardless of where a child falls on the Spectrum, they may benefit from MeRT.

ASD can affect how a child can interpret the outside world, and many have trouble both processing stimuli and being able to express themselves in responding to it.

MeRT can help unlock more of the potential that is locked up inside or somehow not connecting as it should. In many cases, treatment with MeRT has resulted in improved symptoms.

"Words can’t describe how thankful we are that we found Brain Treatment Center. Shortly after our 4-year old son’s diagnosis, we learned about the success of MeRT and immediately started trying to find the right center for us. The impact of the treatments were immediate, from eye contact to him noticing his surroundings, and even improved communication with us … by week 5, he was using a spoon for the first time! If you are considering treatment for your child, we highly recommend."

MeRT for Depression

Symptoms can vary from person to person based on severity and can range from mild to severe. Depression can be debilitating and affect quality of life and even the ability to function normally. It can be brought on acutely by a specific situation such as the death of a loved one or physical or emotional trauma or illness, but it can also have unknown causes and can be chronic.

Many people who are chronically depressed take medication to help them manage the symptoms associated with Depression, however, medication can have unwanted side effects and serves to manage symptoms. MeRT is non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive treatment for Depression.

Depression can be a serious illness. In fact, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S. and has been on the rise for teens and adults. Up to 7.4% of teens between grades 9-12 reported that they have attempted suicide at least once in the last twelve months!

Getting the right kind of help for Depression can be a matter of life and death!

“I’ve made significant progress in cognitive ability, stress tolerance, and mental clarity. I have been able to handle decisions much better and think clearer. I have been able to significantly decrease conflict w/ my family and actually lead much better.”

Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion

Depending on the severity of the brain injury, symptoms can be mild or severe. If you’ve suffered a mild concussion, a full recovery can be made simply by allowing some time to pass. Generally, with a mild concussion, loss of consciousness does not occur, though you may still experience a jostled feeling or not remember the actual injury itself. In some cases, a person may suffer a concussion and not be aware of it at the time, but later develop symptoms.

However, in moderate to severe injuries, and with loss of consciousness, time may not alleviate the symptoms and further intervention is necessary. This is also true if a person suffers a second or multiple injuries to the brain. Severe injuries to the head often result in long periods of coma and require hospitalization, and some can cause death.

Patients who have severe injuries sometimes require long periods of hospitalization and may need rehabilitation for things such as speech or other senses affected, memory, coordination and motor skills, and even for emotions. People’s lives can be seriously disrupted because of a brain injury and may affect their relationships, the ability to cope with normal stressors, the ability to work again, or to even complete simple day-to-day activities.

Statistics for closed head injuries indicate that for patients who have a moderate injury, 60% will make a positive recovery, but approximately 25% will not and will continue to have impaired function. For those who suffer a severe brain injury, 33% will not survive, and others may be left in a vegetative state.

MeRT treatment can help alleviate associated symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-concussive Syndrome and has helped patients to be able to get their lives back with significant improvements in symptoms.

I’m two or three months past my last treatment, and I can honestly say my brain is in a better place than it was before. The emotional highs and lows I was living with have stabilized. My cognition took off during that period, and it hasn’t slowed down since.” – Nick Hardwick, Retired NFL Center, Chargers

MeRT for PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder)

PTSD, or Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, can occur when a person has experienced or witnessed terrifying life events. It can also be triggered when someone has gone through extended periods of severe stress.

The symptoms of PTS can continue for months or years, and in some cases, can get worse. It’s also possible to have a delayed onset of Post-traumatic Stress as in some cases of child abuse. One may get through traumatic events, only to have them triggered years later by something else.

One recent study completed by the National Institute of Health indicates up to 3.6% of adults experienced PTSD. The symptoms associated with this mental health problem can significantly affect quality of life, relationships, and the ability to cope with everyday stressors.

MeRT has been used very successfully to treat PTSD.

Everything changed when I started treatment. Within two weeks I was sleeping better. I was off all 12 of my meds that I was on when I started treatment, and I was starting to enjoy life again. After the first month I was socializing with people again, I was able to work out for the first time in years, and I started to help my wife with the bills and our budget.

As I write this, I just completed my sixth week of treatment. A conservative estimate is that I have had a 60 – 70% reduction of the symptoms I listed above and have a whole new lease on life. I can focus. I feel good about myself. I feel confident. I laugh again. Most importantly, I can feel the love for and from my family again.”

Our PROCESS

Steps to Take

To find out if MeRT is the right choice for you or your child, begin by reaching out to our New Patient Coordinator. She is available to provide detailed information about the treatment, protocols, costs, and payment options. If you decide to proceed, we will schedule your initial two appointments for a non-invasive brain scan and a consultation with the doctor to discuss the scan results and potential benefits of treatment.

01

Initial Testing

For the EEG (brain scan), we fit a cap on one’s head to record the brain’s electrical activity and identify any areas with irregular function. For the EKG, we place an electrode on the chest to capture the heart’s electrical signals and assess the coherence between the brain and heart.

02

Consultation

Following the qEEG/EKG will be a consultation with our doctor, either in person or virtually. During this meeting, we will review your test results, explain the treatment protocols, address any questions you might have, and discuss the potential benefits of treatment.

03

Treatment

If you move forward with treatment, the first week of MeRT will consist of 45 minutes each day for five days, Monday through Friday. The second week of treatment will last for four days, Monday through Thursday, followed by new testing on Friday.

04

Assessment

Most courses of treatment with MeRT run for about 6 weeks with a new brain scan done every two weeks to assess progress and to continue to customize treatment for best results. Tailored treatment protocols are what help make MeRT even more effective than rTMS.
